Magneto- X-Men #25 "Fatal Attractions"
The X-Men #25 "Fatal Attractions" story arc is an important illustration of Magneto's villainy and is one of the most popular stories in X-Men comics. The story's popularity comes from a fight scene that fans have always been waiting for... between Wolverine and Magneto.
The events of "Fatal Attraction" begin as Magneto and his Acolytes take control of Cable's space station, renaming it "Avalon", and use it as a base of recruitment for new mutants. The United Nations hears of Magneto's plan and sets up a series of satellites to inhibit Magneto's power. The satellites effectively prevent Magneto from bringing any new mutants to Avalon.
Magneto retaliates by emitting an enormous electromagnetic pulse that disables the satellites and blacks out the entire earth- killing hundreds of thousands of people.
In response, the X-Men send a small strike team to take on Magneto. Magneto bests them all but when the Wolverine and Magneto face off, Wolverine almost guts Magneto with his claws. In his rage, Magneto uses his power of Magnetism to rip the adamantium out of Wolverine's body- nearly killing him.
When Max Eisenhardt first took up the mantle of Magneto he was retaliating, in his mind, against the coming mutant holocaust. Magneto was making a vow to protect mutant kind and find a way for his people to live in peace. In Planet X we see that Magneto's fear has turned into hate for humanity- and that he no longer fears a holocaust... he chooses to bring one. The "Fatal Attractions" books are significant because they further illustrate the sliding scale of Magneto's morality. Though they stand against him the X-Men are mutants as well. Magneto's ability, both physical and phycological, to to inflict such pain on the very people he is trying to protect is telling of both his love of carnage and his relentless pursuit of his goals.
